Zona glomerulosa - Definition
It is the name given to the most superficial layer of the suprarenal gland cortex (adrenal cortex). It is the outermost of the three adrenal cortex layers, the other two being the Zona reticularis and the Zona fasciculata.
Zona glomerulosa - Location
It lies in a position immediately beneath the adrenal gland capsule.
Zona glomerulosa – Appearance
The structure appears narrow and its cells are arranged in clusters or arches, appearing ovoid in shape.
Zona glomerulosa - Function
The aldosterone hormone, that regulates the salt-water balance in body, is secreted by this structure into the bloodstream in response to an elevation the levels of potassium within the system. The glomerulosa also manufactures various enzymes that change Pregnenolone to Aldesterone in various significant steps.
