 Underarm Rash

What is an Underarm Rash?

As the name indicates, it is a rash or eruption developing over the skin of the folds of the arm, or armpits. It causes itchiness and irritation among sufferers.

Underarm Rash - Incidence

The condition is extremely common in the U.S. It also has a wide prevalence among the global population.

Underarm Rash - Symptoms

The symptoms of this condition include:

Pain

These rashes are usually painless, but arise in clusters over the armpits. They are usually felt when a person having them tries to shave the underarm area or wears tight upper garments that irritate the region. Tight garments lead to a friction between the rashes and the clothes, and thus result in pain.

itching

People having these rashes suffer from persistent itchiness. Scratching the affected skin area alleviates the itchiness although only temporarily and can worsen the pain.

irritation

Patients also experience irritation in the skin area where the itchy rashes arise.

burning sensation

In some individuals, continuous itchiness can make patients feel a burning sensation.

Underarm Rash - Causes

The primary causes for the disorder include:
  • Skin allergies, due to use of products like deodorants
  • Heat, due to affected skin region being covered by clothes
  • Hot and humid weather conditions
  • Pregnancy
  • Shaving the underarms (a primary cause), which irritates the skin and makes it extremely sensitive
  • Friction, due to constant brushing of armpit with tight dresses
  • Fungal infection, due to sweat accumulation in the armpit
  • Yeast Infection, causing itchiness in the underarm area

In some individuals, the rashes may indicate certain underlying disorders such as skin infections, diabetes, AIDS and venereal diseases.

Underarm Rash - Diagnosis

Physical observation is usually enough to diagnose the problem. Patients are also asked about their lifestyle, use of any allergens or whether they wear tight clothes.

Underarm Rash - Treatment

Treatment is based on the possible causes and the appearance of the rashes. Medical treatment involves the use of one or more of the following:
  • Over-the-counter drugs
  • Ointments
  • Creams
  • Vitamin E capsules (to aid in faster recovery)
  • Anti-fungal cream, in case of fungal infections
  • Anti-itching creams
  • Antibiotics (for acute rashes)
  • Ointments and creams are generally used more than oral drugs.

Early treatment is essential, especially in case of pregnancy as it can indicate the presence of some acute underlying condition.

Underarm Rash - Home Remedy

The condition can be treated at home with the aid of:
  • Aloe Vera
  • Baking Soda paste
  • Antiperspirants

Underarm Rash - Prevention

You can prevent the condition by adapting the following measures:
  • Using prickly heat powders
  • Use of a sharp razor (and a shaving cream before using razor)
  • Wearing loose garments, to allow the area to air-dry and get ventilated properly
A bacterial infection in the area can be prevented by the use of Candula, and similar antibacterial powders.
