EponychiumEponychium - definition
Eponychium refers to a very small epithelial band that extends from the rear section of the nail to its base. It actually indicates the point of termination the proximal fold that pushes itself back to discard a freshly formed epidermal skin layer over a nail plate.
It is often wrongly called a “proximal fold” or “cuticle”. Eponychium - location
This thick skin layer is found to enwrap the nails of the toes as well as that of the fingers. It tightly attaches itself to the nail plate and moves with the constantly growing plate.
Eponychium - function
This structure performs protective functions in the sense that it primarily serves as a safety barrier for the area within the epidermis and the nail. It prevents the nail matrix from getting infected by resisting the entry of microbes like bacteria. It can also be found to act as a short hoof in newborns and fetuses of certain animals.
