what is Conus arteriosus?

This is a conical sac or pouch that develops from the upper and the left angle of the right ventricular chamber of the heart of chordates. The pulmonary trunk arises from this pouch that is smooth-walled in appearance.

The structure is also known by any of these names:
  • Cône artériel
  • Pulmonary conus 
  • Infundibulum of right ventricle
  • Outflow tract of right ventricle

Conus arteriosus Location

It is located at the entrance of the pulmonary trunk in the chordate heart. 

Conus arteriosus Function

The sac lets blood pass through it without flowing into the lungs. Entry to the lungs is permitted once they develop fully, allowing newborns to respire on their own.
