AntihelixAntihelix Definition
The antihelix is a small-sized curved elevation of cartilage that surrounds the concha and lies in a position in front of the helix. This is a Y-shaped cartilaginous ridge that originates from the antitragus, and separates the scapha, concha and triangular fossa. The fossa of the helix lies between the antihelix and the helix.
It is also known as Antihelix of pinna, Antihelix (Auricula) and Antihelical part of pinna. In French, it is also referred to as Anthèlix. The antihelix displays a conchal cartilage folding, and it generally has prominence similar to a helix that is developed properly. The stem of the antihelix, or the section under the bifurcation, is softly curved and branches much of the way along the course to develop the inferior crus and the superior antihelical crus. The superior and inferior antihelix crura can vary in degree and volume of folding. Superior Antihelix Crus
The upper cartilaginous ridge originates at the antihelix bifurcation and isolates the triangular fossa scapha. The superior crus passes in a slightly anterior and superior direction, and is typically folded less sharply than the inferior crus and the lower section.
The superior Antihelix Crus is also known as the posterior antihelix crus. Inferior Antihelix Crus
It is the lower cartilaginous ridge that originates at the antihelix bifurcation that ends under the ascending helix fold, and keeps the concha isolated from the triangular fossa. It passes in a slight superior and anterior direction. It is generally defined sharply, and seems to be less variable than the superior antihelix crus.
It is also referred to as anterior antihelix crus. What is Helix Piercing?
It refers to the process of upper ear (helix) perforation with a small-sized, hollow and gauged piercing needle for the insertion of a ring or jewelry.
How is Helix Piercing Done?
It is typically conducted with the help of a sterile 18 gauge hollow needle. Novice or beginner level piercers often use curved needles. The ear canal opening can be blocked with a tiny cork, to prevent the entry of foreign particles into the ear. The needle has to stay inside until the addition of the jewelry.
The technique demands minimal movement of head, given that perforating the area needs significant pressure. People are advised to lie down when ears are perforated. Gun piercing needs to be avoided, given that it might cause infection and result in abrupt shock to the ear. How Painful is Helix Piercing?Helix piercing pain is not much, given that there are no nerve endings in the helix. Pain might be experienced if a lot of pressure is put over the cartilage at the time of perforation. The pain lasts typically for a few seconds, but can depend on the pain bearing ability of the person.
There can be some discomfort once the jewelry is put into the hole that is newly formed. Given that there is destruction of blood vessels at the time of piercing, there can be a small amount of bleeding for around an hour. However, this is not worrisome. Inflammation or the discharge of a pale colored lymphatic fluid is not a symptom of any infection. Helix Piercing Aftercare Instructions
How to Heal Helix Piercing? The pain can persist for around 2 – 4 months, which depends on the precautions and care taken after piercing as well. However, complete helix piercing healing time can take about 1 year.
How to Wear Helix Piercing Jewelry? After helix piercing, you can wear various types of showy and decorative jewelry. Some kinds of Helix piercing jewelry that you can wear after piercing can include:
Helix Piercing CostIf you are wondering how much does helix piercing cost, relax with the knowledge that it is not very expensive. The cost tends to vary from one piercing shop to another. The cost, however, ranges from around 20 to 50 USD. It also depends on how reputed the shop is.
Helix Piercing Types
There are various types of helix piercing done today.
Inner helix piercing A small curved needle is used to pierce the inner ear cartilage. Upper helix piercing Piercing is done in the upper section of the helix. Lower helix piercing This type of perforation decorates the lower helix area. Single Helix Piercing It is the single perforation done in the helix or upper cartilage area. Double Helix Piercing It includes double perforations done in the upper ear cartilage. Triple Helix Piercing It involves 3 piercings conducted consecutively. Forward helix piercing Perforation is conducted in the upper helix region where the head and the ear meet. Reverse helix piercing In this method, the perforation is done in the helix area in a reverse manner. Mid helix piercing The mid helix area can be decorated by a single stud or two studs. Vertical helix piercing The helix area is vertically pierced in order to place the jewelry. Helix orbital piercing In this method, dual piercings are conducted side by side in a way that the ring seems to revolve around the ear. Anti Helix Piercing It is also referred to as the snug. The piercing passes through the anti helix area or the inner cartilage ridge - from the mid section to the side. You can wear a captive bead ring or a small curved barbel.
