Mainstem bronchus - TypesBased on its position and entry into the lungs, this structure is classified into the following two types:
Left Mainstem bronchusIt enters the left lung base. Approximately 5 cm in length, it is longer than its counterpart at the right. However, it has a smaller diameter.
Right Mainstem bronchusIt enters the right lungs. Around 2.5 cm long, it is shorter than the left bronchus but is wider in shape and points in a more vertical direction.
Mainstem bronchus - FunctionThis respiratory structure is mainly responsible for supplying oxygen to the right and the left lungs to make exchange of gases easier.
