EndoneuriumEndoneurium DefinitionIt is an endoneurial channel that keeps axons isolated from one another within a peripheral nerve. It is also referred to as:
Endoneurium - LocationThis tube-like structure is situated inside the peripheral nerves.
Endoneurium AnatomyIt is constituted by cells of the connective tissue that can be found all around the peripheral nerve axons which transmit signals from one end to the other of a neuron. It is composed of collagen.
Endoneurium FunctionsIts functions include the following:
Isolating nerve signals
The peripheral nerves have multiple axons that can transmit signals to several muscles in the body. The Endoneurium is responsible for keeping these signals separate so as to let them be transmitted to the correct locations.
Protecting the axons
It also extends protection to the delicate axons and saves it from any potential injury.
Insulating the neurons
It insulates the neurons from damage, a function that is shared by the perineurium and the epineurium.
