Articular tubercle - appearance
The Temporomandibular joint, or articular capsule of the TMJ, enwraps this structure along with the articular fossa. The mandibular fossa binds it anteriorly.
Articular tubercle - function
The anterior boundary of the mandibular fossa is created by this structure. When it is fresh, this bony growth is covered by a cartilaginous layer. This bony projection forms the frontal root of the zygomatic process.
The mandibular crown, along with the interfering articular disc, enters the articular tubercle. This lets the aperture of the mouth (or mandible) to be pressed down completely. Articular tubercle - pictures
