Aortic arch - Definition
The aortic arch is one of the three sections of the thoracic aorta, the other two being the ascending and the descending aorta. It is a direct continuation of the ascending aorta.

It is located inside the mediastinum, the thoracic cavity section between the lungs that is comprised of the aorta, heart, trachea, thymus and esophagus.
Aortic arch - Origin
The structure arises at the sternomanubrial joint. It ends at the lower border of T4 and becomes the descending aorta.
Aortic arch - Functions
It serves as a connection between the ventral and the dorsal arterial systems. It also joins with the dorsal aorta in order to create the great vessels of the neck and head.
