It refers to the spine on the anterior edge of the ilium. It is also referred to as "Anterior inferior Iliac spine" or "AIIS".
Anterior inferior spine - Location
It is situated between the acetabulum and the anterior superior iliac spine.
Anterior inferior spine - Appearance
A shallow notch in the anterior iliac margin isolates the structure from the anterior superior spine.
Anterior inferior spine - Function
The apex of this structure serves as the site of origin for the the straight tendon of the muscle known as "Rectus femoris". The inferior surface of the landmark provides attachment for the iliofemoral ligament.
