Ala of Nose - Definition
It refers to the wing-shaped structures that make up the walls of the nostrils. It is the lateral surface of the external nose that is also referred to by the name "Wing of the nose" or "Nasal ala."
In Latin, it is known as "Ala nasi." It is called "Aile du nez" by the French.
Ala of Nose - Anatomy and Appearance
It is comprised of the thin flexible alar cartilage and the neighboring integument. It is innervated by the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve and elevated by the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle.
Ala of Nose - Function
It flares out to create a rounded eminence in the region surrounding the nostril.
